News item from today's papers which speaks for itself (against UKIP). This one is from the Daily Telegraph:

    Quote:
A FRENCHMAN managed to survive 10 months using only objects "made in France" but his use of six Ikea forks, a Chinese guitar and some unspecified foreign wallpaper meant he fell short of the 100 per cent Gallic mark.
Benjamin Carle was declared 96.9 per cent made in France, right down to his Gallic cockerel tattoo, but said it was no easy task to be an economic patriot.
The 26-year-old set out last year to see if it was possible to live using only French-made products as part of a television documentary, aired last night. He got the idea after hearing Arnaud Monte-bourg, the minister for economic renewal, call for people to buy French to save the country's industries.
With a budget limited to €1,800 (£1,500) a month, his first task was to throw away foreign fare, which meant saying au revoir to his British bicycle, Thai jeans, Moroccan underpants, Guatemalan coffee, Chinese-made smartphone, television and refrigerator and his beloved David Bowie collection. Some items, including his refrigerator and nail clippers, proved impossible to replace. He could not find jeans and it took some time to track down France's last remaining toothbrush maker. The only French-made washing machine was the wrong size for his kitchen.
Going out with friends also proved challenging, as he had to steer clear of American films, Belgian beer, sushi or pizza.
Unable to find a cheap French car whose parts had not been assembled abroad, he settled for an orange Mobylette moped.
His "computer" was a Qooq recipe tablet barely able to connect to the internet.

Will be useful for our debate against them at our premises in Clapham High Street next Wednesday.

'One world' is not exactly a good argument against UKIP, since the British Empire also sought and went a good way (at its peak) to achieving 'one world'. I'm sure UKIP supporters might look fondly back to when the British Empire held sway over about 458 million people, one-fifth of the world's population at the time and covered more than 33,700,000 km2 (13,012,000 sq mi), almost a quarter of the Earth's total land area.

I think you may be thinking more of the old League of Empire Loyalists. UKIP is in fact isolationist, opposing UK intervention in Iraq, Afghanistran and Syria as "foreign wars":.

Yep good point UKIP is isolationist in common terminology. Although the logic of this seems to be me to be an argument for Scottish independence (as more isolationist) – which UKIP oppose. Perhaps a better term would be protectionist as they are protective of the status quo whether the existing UK or as I would speculate the British Empire when it existed. Wouldn't the League of Empire Loyalists have come across as isolationist in respect of conflicts where they saw no British interest or thought Britain would not profit from?

Having watched the Nigel Farage hagiography on Channel 4 and the debate with Elizabeth Jones, it seems I may have been wrong. UKIP looks more libertarian minded than paleoconservative League of Empire Loyalists style.

I watched the Forage-Clogg debate on BBC2 last night and, with Forage's appeal for a "people's army" to "topple the establishment" of career politicians and big business "who got us into this mess" , UKIP seems (or is trying to be) more like the know-nothing Tea Party in the US. Which is why it is a bit worrying that most people who saw it seem to have sympathised with what Forage said, even though Clogg pointed out that the "independent UK" UKIP proposes is a complete "fantasy". It would be nice to think that this was because Forage opposed military intervention abroad in contrast to Clogg's war-mongering over Ukraine and Syria but I doubt it.

What did you think of Clegg's comment about the gold standard?

I don't think Clegg was suggesting that UKIP was actually advocating a return to the gold standard, was he, but simply giving it as a rhetorical example of the sort of nostalgic thing that UKIP would advocate. Or has some UKIP buffoon proposed this, as Ron Paul of the Tea Party in America does? One thing that did strike me was how Farage, in his populist rant, did not attack the bankers as part of the Establishment but only career politicians and big business. That's because UKIP in London is all in favour of the City, defending it against EU regulation. In fact, that was their line during the Greater London Council elections in 2012 when most of the candidates on their list worked in the City (as did Farage himself of course). So I don't think they are into funny money schemes.

I might have to take this back as I've just remembered that their candidate for Richmond at the last election, Peter Dul, once wrote to my local paper attacking "fractional reserve banking" and calling for "debt-free money". See:https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/spgbmedia/conversations/messages/192But I don't think this is official UKIP policy and won't be supported by Farage and his newly-acquired team of spin doctors.Since the main thing UKIP is advocating, ie. UK withdrawal from the EU, is against the interests of the dominant section of the capitalist class in Britain it will be interesting to see what dirty tricks they get up to to discredit Farage and UKIP if they turn out to be a real threat to their interests.
