Never been a fan and perhaps his motives are questionable but I tend to sympathise with Aaronovich in this exchange that personal individual experience demonstates the similarity of the Scots and English, not their separateness. Riddoch plays the well-played card of taking advantage of the Scottish 'superior' system creating a more self conscious people but as Aaronovich tries to argue but failed to expand upon, people in Scotland see as much fault with the health and school system as English do with their own and there is no qualtive difference in political attitudes. The SOYMB highlighted this by explaining when it came to immigration the Scots are still anti-immigrant but not just as much as the English .
I think in another blog post it was said when confronted by the tactics of Riddoch in declaring independence will strengthen the already 'better' Scottish system our task is to simply emphasise its class failings…the poor still don't get to the better schools or into higher education , the poor still have higher rates of preventable illness and so on. We should not resort to a holier than thou response of some No and Yes campaigners who want it to be a league table battle.

The north-east received a measly £5 per head. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/10/public-money-private-wealth-london-north-v-southTo set the cat amongst the pigeons.

According to this, it is 57.7% in Scotland compared with 47.9% in England as a whole and only 40% in London and in the South East. (In Wales and Northern Ireland it's nearly 70%).This suggests that an independent Scotland would have difficulty sustaining this on its own, i.e there is a risk that it will result in the worsening of conditions for most workers there. Personally, I think this would happen and is a case for voting "No" on trade-union grounds. (Of course we abstain on socialist grounds). The SWP have brought out a pamphlet with the ridiculous title of "YES TO INDEPENDENCE, NO TO NATIONALISM". How do you that?Perhaps we could start a competition for the best such silly slogans, eg. YES TO WAR. NO TO KILLING or YES TO LABOUR, NO TO CAPITALISM
