York Festival of Ideas, Sunday 16 June 2013

    York festival of Ideas

We're recording an afternoon of provocative debate at York University’s Ron Cooke Hub.

    12:00-1:00pm

Radio 3’s Rana Mitter will be asking a panel of business people, economists and historians if ethical business is affordable today, or whether wealth creation itself is really the ethical action.

As austerity bites into family finances and public services, cheap goods seem ever more attractive, even vital. But is there a price to pay in fairness, and to the environment? York has a long history of making ethical business ideals a reality, but can those ideas be carried forward into the era of austerity?

    2:00-3:00pm

In the year that Richard III’s remains were identified beneath a Leicester Car Park, Free Thinking will be in York, the seat of his power, to debate how the Wars of the Roses shaped the country from the 15th century right up to the present day.

Radio 3’s Rana Mitter and a panel of top historians including the University of York’s Mark Ormrod will be exploring the legacy of the Wars of the Roses, from the tough choices and trauma ordinary people faced, to the role the conflict played in pushing England towards modernity.

The Ron Cooke Hub, University of York, Heslington East, Heslington, York, YO10 5GE

    Admission is free but ticketed.
