Doors open 6.30pm, lecture starts at 7pm.

Jeremy Bentham the founder of Utilitarianism, created a ‘Felicific Calculus’ by which in theory one could ascertain whether legislation contributed, as it should, to ‘the greatest happiness of the greatest number’.

Influential as that formula was, John Stuart Mill thought the Felicific Calculus as Bentham had presented it was too crude and dangerous a yardstick by which to judge legislation, and produced a more sophisticated Utilitarianism. The lecture will examine the issues at stake.”

The lecture will be given by Ralph Blumenau, who returns to The Idler by popular demand. He has been described by The Independent as “a star lecturer” at the University of the Third Age in London and was Head of History at Malvern College until his retirement in 1985.
