Would it be possible to tweak the HTML for the worldsocialism.org/spgb page as it is currently nowhere to be seen in Google searches for “socialist party”? The other (formerly Militant) socialist party come top for “socialist party” searches. The main reason seems to be they have “Socialist Party” in their HTML <title> and in their HTML <description> and we don’t, so Google is not providing a prominent link to our page.

Would it not be a good idea to change our HTML <title> from “worldsocialism.org/spgb – Part of the World Socialist Movement” to “Socialist Party – Part of the World Socialist Movement”, and if possible, do the same for the HTML <description> ? I think that would give us a top 5 Google ranking.

If that’s doable, it sounds like a good suggestion.

Here´s something posted by someone from the Ex Militant tendency on one of the debate forums I am on

    https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/articles/103850/07-10-2017/our-name-change-debate/?fbclid=IwAR1XpdaF9c0lVFaAQHkVUnEPMIGbMAuH-5tDGM1_9P36WUMWlINTtvd6SaA

I agree completely with the suggestion offered. Let’s do it

A little quote from that article gives an interesting insight into the SPEW mentality:

“This led us to raise publicly the idea of an alternative workers’ party to Labour. We recognised that this was still a minority view, even amongst those who had retained a socialist consciousness, some of whom could be won to a revolutionary programme and organisation. This was illustrated by the singing of ‘The Internationale’ on mass demonstrations in France in the period following the collapse of the Soviet Union.”

There you have it, spoken from the lips of the vanguard. You can judge the level of socialist consciousness, the level of understanding of the need to reorganise society on the basis of common ownership, the level of public insight into the class struggle between those who own the means of production and those who produce wealth, by knowing that ……………… some French people were having a sing song.

Fuck me rigid, if I had know that 40 years ago I would have learned to play the mouth organ and we’d all now be living in a Socialist society.

Search Engine Optimisation is a bit more complicated than that, but having the URL of worldsocialism.org/spgb (rather than something like socialistpartyofgreatbritian.org) won’t be helping either. If the keywords are in the URL that helps a bit too. This is one of the reasons why SPEW is beating the SPGB in the search rankings for sure.

In that case, why not put it down as “worldsocialism.org/TheSocialistParty”? That will get ´em!

Think you get more points for the word being in the domain name (ie before the .org or .com or whatever).

This website seems to be hitting number two, after Wikipedia for searches on “World Socialist Movement”. BTW

I know next-to-nothing about SEO (and what follows might be utter twaddle, so please allow for that)

Kind of following on from what Robbo was suggesting re using the definite article in the url and DJP’s insights..

I did a search on godaddy and saw that, for example, the domain name thesocialistparty.org is currently available to purchase. (also ~ofgreatbritain etc)

    https://uk.godaddy.com/whois/results.aspx?itc=dlp_domain_whois&domainName=thesocialistparty.org

Does SPGB content absolutely have to be part of worldsocialism.org?

If not, would shelling out this kind of money for new domain name be of any benefit?

if so, could you acquire a new domain purely to have a landing page (for SEO) which then links to the existing worldsocialism.org/spgb content (to preserve the WSM structure and connection)?

Either way, I imagine you’d then pay a professional to work on tags and wotnot to optimise the chances of gaining and maintaining the top ranking spot?

Might any of this make any sense in the real world?

Whatever else may be the case, I personally think that knocking Spewtum off their perch is incredibly important and worth throwing (serious) money at. They are the Cybercourtesans, We* are THE Socialist Party…

*or, rather YOU, as I am a mere simperingpathiser

Guess what I was partly saying was why should the Party absolutely have to be spgb.net to distinguish it from (and in doing so cede the SP name to the spewoids)? Distinction comes through the content. If hundreds or maybe thousands looking for SPEW click on, say, thesocialistparty.org looking for their stuff, only to encounter socialist content, all the good.

I think Google are wise to those kind of tricks. If you try and trick it, it can end up making the ranking worse.

Either way, we are both talking about things for other people to do. And I’m not sure those that deal with that kind of thing even look at these posts?
