I mentioned this in another comment but thought it deserved it’s own thread.
It seems that UK internet service providers (ISPs) have been forced to block various websites due to Russian sanctions. And this situation has been in place for a few months.
For example, has anyone else in the UK found that the RT.com website is now inaccessible?
I’ve not noticed any articles on the major news sources about this, but maybe I missed something?
If you want to get around it you can download TOR browser and view it that way.
I found this blog post with more information: https://www.revk.uk/2022/04/the-latest-crazy-law.html
September 21, 2022 at 7:07 pm #233440ALBKeymasterI can get RT on my smartphone but not on my laptop. There are some good leads there, to follow up by checking elsewhere of course Like this one:

If you can read it.
September 21, 2022 at 7:32 pm #233443DJPParticipantIf you can get it on your mobile, I’m guessing your network is not 3. I can’t get it on my mobile either, which is on that network.
But I can get around it by using TOR browser as I mentioned before. Possibly using a virtual private network (VPN) would have the same effect.
September 21, 2022 at 8:20 pm #233445ALBKeymasterThey don’t seem to have banned TASS, have they?
September 21, 2022 at 8:26 pm #233446MooParticipantI couldn’t access RT.com/news, but could after connecting to a VPN.
Firstly, the police are now allowed to stop protests that are deemed ‘too noisy’ or cause a nuisance; then we were bombarded with royalist propaganda; and now we’re not allowed to access the propaganda websites of countries we’re not officially at war with! The UK is slowly and steadily turning into North Korea!

I can get Tass.com on my standard connection so it seems not.
I wonder where / if you can get a list of the banned websites?
September 21, 2022 at 8:47 pm #233449ALBKeymasterI can get Sputnik on my phone but not my laptop.
September 21, 2022 at 8:54 pm #233450DJPParticipantYep, Sputnik only through TOR for me. Interesting that one of the top menu items on that site is an article on how to use a VPN.
Also interesting that not all of the mobile operators are blocking access.
September 21, 2022 at 9:19 pm #233451DJPParticipantSeemingly the RT and Sputnik website block is to do with an EU and UK ban in response to the invasion, rather than the sanctioning of individuals as I first thought. I knew they had stopped the TV station, and that social media sites weren’t allowing their content to be shared, but hadn’t realised actual access to the websites was blocked too. Seems not all the internet companies are doing it though.

September 25, 2022 at 1:36 am #233600alanjjohnstoneKeymasterWe are growing accustomed to the reports of Russian and Chinese influences in the propaganda war. Less so on the West’s efforts to spread its propaganda.
Researchers from Stanford University and internet research firm, Graphika found most of the Information Operation ‘likely originated in the United States’. From there it ran a massive, interconnected web of automated ‘bot’ accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms.
The extent of this covert black-ops surprised me

The Socialist Party of Great Britain is unique in keeping open platform for the expression of the point of view of opponents.
We oppose all forms of suppression, not in response to some abstract principle, but because we recognise that Socialist Society demands for its operation, as for its achievement, a responsible, intelligent population, used to drawing its own conclusions from the observation of facts and the weighing up of the arguments of opposing schools of thought. We only know our position to be correct because it survives continuous criticism. We do not deny that suppression may be immediately useful to the British or the Irish governing class. We do deny that it can serve the purpose of the Socialist movement.

Freedom of speech is not insulting, name calling and stepping on top of somebody else. I am going to attend public meeting from the left like the old days ( they are starting again ) and I am to express my ideas I do not care if the shoot back. We can not be hermits, that is the reason why several companion parties are dying, and I think that they are going to disappear
