    I know this is like a dog bites man news story, but it confirms what we have always said about conflicts under capitalism over trade routes, source of raw materials and investment outlets being the cause of wars. But a headline in yesterday’s Times read: “Navy to defend Arctic trade as ice melts” and began:

    “The Royal Navy will have a regular presence in the Arctic Circle to counter the Russian strategic advantage over trade routes that will open as the ice caps melt, sources have revealed.”

    and went on;

    ”A Navy source said:’The world’s prosperity depends on trade. If trade routes open up we have make sure they remain open and are not dominated by one or two countries.”

    Understood: And if they don’t remain open and diplomatic means fails, then we will use military force to re-open them, as has happened many times before in different parts of the world.

    A new Royal Navy ship is to be built to protect “critical” undersea cables. The Ministry of Defence said the cables, which are “vital to the global economy and communications between governments”, are at “risk of sabotage” due to “submarine warfare”.

    We all know that a “protect” capability can also be used to “attack”

    “… The MoD added it will also “be able to support with other defence tasks, including exercises and operations in the Arctic which will become an increasingly contested area”…”
