We are probably all aware of Yemen.
14m people face starvation, the Worlds worst humanitarian crisis in 100 years, the UN. 85,000 children have died from malnutrition and starvation.
However, people are only to quick to sling at us, Venezuela?
So many people are “concerned” vocally about the plight of Venezuelans. Yet seemingly ignore the plight of Yemenis!?
I don’t understand? Is this a case of the US government, US Oil Corporations and US capitalist interests generally. Using its propaganda machine, going into overdrive because of Venezuelas Oil?
December 30, 2018 at 1:00 am #174891alanjjohnstoneKeymasterNot sure if people/countries really care about Venezuela either. The exodus of millions is not receiving the humanitarian attention it deserves.
As for why the US/UK are involving themselves, albeit by proxy, is not for directly capturing resources. Yemen has no significant supply of oil or raw materials. It is the poorest of the Arab states. Apart from the mercenary reason that US/UK can sell weapons to the Saudis and Gulf state, this is a war of gaining political control of the region. Yemen is strategically located. Saudi and the Emirates seek to expand their presence and minimise Iranian influence in the region. As they are the US/UK partners in the area, they are supported diplomatically and logistically and a convenient blind eye turned to their military excesses.
But we are not to assume that the UAE and Saudi Arabia are singing from the same songsheet. They have their own individual interests to promote. See this blog post.

Propped up by the UAE, separatists in southern Yemen have declared self-rule.
It appears it will be just like Somalia where we have the officially recognised nation but there exists independent nations of Somaliland and Puntland.
With the Yemen civil war unresolved with all factions supported by strong outside states, it seems that Yemen will not be.
April 26, 2020 at 11:58 am #200024Bijou DrainsParticipantThe Saudi position, geographically is very precarious. They have the outlet for oil shipments through the Suez canal, always pretty dodgy but there is instability in Egypt at the moment. They have the outlet through the Persian Gulf and the straits of Hormuz, currently being pressurised by the Iranians, and then the outlet throught the Gulf of Aden, which is conrolled through Yemen, and Djibouti at the Bab-el-Mandeb straits. to the South of Saudi Arabia is Oman, and they seem to have been slightly more favourable to the Qataris in their dispute with the Saudis, than some of the surrounding states. The Saudis may hace painted themselves into a bit of a corner.

January 11, 2021 at 7:05 pm #212338alanjjohnstoneKeymasterBeing officially designated as a terrorist organisation has consequences for humanitarian NGOs who have to work alongside the Houthi government.
“The Houthis don’t really have assets outside Yemen to freeze. Instead this measure will further weaken the Yemeni people who live under Houthi control and make it easier for Houthis to tighten their grip and recruit more children to the battlefield,” he said. “The extra cost [associated with providing aid] is also more likely than not to go to the pockets of Houthi-affiliated middlemen.”

Karma? Case of speaking too soon. What about chicken have come home to roost?
They are saying that Trump is an anti-imperialist, anti-globalist, anti expansionist and that he has not started any war. The biggest that he has carried is the war against the working class, and some reporters have indicated that during his presidency more bombed have ben dropped than prior presidents

The conflict has left millions (14m Say the U.N, the world’s worst humanitarian crisis in 100 years) of Yemenis on the brink of starvation.
The US is to end its support for offensive operations by its allies in Yemen, which has been devastated by a six-year war in which more than 110,000 people are believed to have died.

Biden said ‘this war has to end’ in state department speech outlining overhaul of Trump’s foreign policiesFebruary 5, 2021 at 2:15 am #213512AnonymousInactiveBut he will continue turning the screws on Venezuela, and recognizing Guaido as the legitimate president of Venezuela
February 5, 2021 at 3:02 am #213513alanjjohnstoneKeymasterHow will Biden differentiate between arming the Saudis defensively against Iran and offensively against the Houthi? It will be the same weapons. He stopped short of exerting full military sanctions as pressure to bring the war to an end.
The UK’s BAE will be eying the prospective future arms deals with glee.
February 5, 2021 at 3:39 pm #213527james19ParticipantBiden said the conflict in Yemen, which has killed more than 100,000 Yemenis and displaced 8 million, had “created a humanitarian and strategic catastrophe”.
The United Nations says Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 80% of the population in need of aid or protection.

Compare this with the plight of Venezuelans*? Compare Venezuelans plight to shell shocked Yemenis or Syrians. It’s not only Venezuelans trawling through landfill. Syrians are trawling landfill looking for something to eat for their family! Source for this Twitter!
We (Socialists) were accused (on Twitter) of wanting to be a small powerful elite…..do away with people’s freedoms and stop people living a decent life? He has no complaints about Arab States, run by family dynasty’s, who exploit migrant workers, who lock up human rights campaigners and its critics. Who deny people the right to vote…..

February 8, 2021 at 7:29 pm #213674alanjjohnstoneKeymasterUK see the US suspension of arms trade because of Yemen as a business opportunity.
UK Foreign Office minister, James Cleverly, said “The decisions the US takes on matters of arms sales are decisions for the US.”
Saudi Arabia represented 40% of the volume of UK arms exports between 2010 and 2019.

China is also in the same business weapon dealing as the Western powers and the USA
As well Russia is in the same business. All of them are just a bunch of world criminals
